Kilmore Historical Society

Location

We are located in the Old Post Office at 2 Powlett Street, Kilmore. Kilmore is Victoria’s oldest inland settled town.  It is situated 60 kilometres north of Melbourne and nestled in the Great Dividing Range on the Northern Highway, which was once also the road to the goldfields. Being just one day’s coach ride from Melbourne it was the first overnight stop on the journey north.

Kilmore was in the former Shire of Kilmore, now incorporated into the Shire of Mitchell.  Our local areas of interest extend to Kilmore, Beveridge, Bylands, Clonbinane, Darraweit Guim, Wallan, Wandong, Willomavin and Pyalong.

    Greetings! I am trying to trace my ancestors, Michael David Lynch and Johanna (Dwyer) Lynch who lived in Kilmore in the 1890s. Johanna was born there in 1871 to Edmond and Margaret (O’Brien) Dwyer. Ellen Mary Lynch was born in Kilmore in 1899. Michael was a Shire Councillor and had a Grocery/Drapery shop that burnt down prior to his moving to Kyneton. I would like to access any records of their story and also that of Edmond and Margaret and their family, the eldest son being Patrick who appears in records in the early 20th century.

    I will be in Kilmore on September 19 and hope to visit the Historical Society to access your records. I would appreciate any information you can send prior to my visit.

      Dear Bernard

      Thank you for your enquiry. As to any new material we might hold much depends on what research you have already done, for example checking the Victorian BDM indexes. We have not researched this family before (quick check). But I can say that we hold some records not found elsewhere, such as the Court of Petty Sessions registers 1888-1942 (two hits for Michael David Lynch) and Kilmore Council rate books 1863-1875 and 1896 to 1942 (later period not indexed). We also have a large collection of copies of birth death and marriage certificates including at least two relation to your family) So a visit should be rewarding.
