TROVE  

In early 2007 the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program was launched.  The National Library of Australia, in collaboration with Australian State and Territory libraries, began a program to digitise Australian newspapers for access and preservation purposes. By May 2009 Trove had been launched as a resource for information about Australians for Australians. It includes digitised newspapers from 1803-1954, The Australian Women’s Weekly to 1982, journals, articles and datasets, books, pictures, photos, objects, music sound and video,  maps, diaries, letters and archives, archived websites, people and organisations and lists.

    Grave 831 on the Kilmore Catholic Cemetery Register is my great grandfather Martin Murphy who died 18 August 1917 in NSW. He was the husband of Ellen who died 1 September 1892 and father of Cecilia Frances who died 12 July 1896.

    My grandmother’s maiden name was Murphy: she was, I believe, a native of Kilmore-a hamlet a few miles north east of Clonmel in Co Tipperary, Ireland. Her family paid c1937 for a couple of (amateur) paintings of her birthplace to mark, I think, her sixtieth birthday. One of these shows an ‘Old Mill’-it looks kike a ruined textile mill-by a small river. I note that in Kilmore, Victoria there is the ‘Old Mil’ Antiques emporium. I wonder whether there is any link between Victoria’s Kilmore and my grandmother’s birthplace.

      Hi John

      Thanks for raising this question John. In 1841 William Rutledge obtain a Special Survey Grant of 8 square miles in the County of Dalhouise, Colony of New South Wales (later named the Colony of Victoria). Later, in 1841 William had the SE corner surveyed to establish town allotments and to the west and north larger rural allotments. William named the town Kilmore, after his home town in County Cavan. Translated from the Gaelic, the name Kilmore comes from ‘Kil’ – cell, burying place, church and ‘Mor’ –big church. There are at least 14 towns named Kilmore in Ireland. Although many immigrants to settle in Kilmore were from Co Tipperary, the town was named after Kilmore in Co Cavan.

For some information about St Joseph’s school take a look at the three local history books on Kilmore, namely Kilmore 1837-1937 – The Tale of a Century by J A Maher, Kilmore on the Sydney Road, by Maya V Tucker and Kilmore – Those that came before, edited by Heather Knight. KHS has copies as does the Kilmore Library, and the State Library in Melbourne – Grahame KHS

        HI Michelle – St Joseph College closed many tears ago, when Assumption College became co-ed. Perhaps you could contact Assumption – 5783 5000 or maybe the Parish Secretary’s office – 5782 1084.
