List Of Early Victorian Pioneers as Presented to the Duke of Edinburgh in 1868
by Grahame Thom
Introduction
In 1867 Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh, set out on a world tour, including visiting most Australian colonies. The Prince was born in 1844 and was the second son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. It was the first visit by a member of the Royal family to Australia.
The Duke first landed in Adelaide on 31 October 1867, and in Melbourne on 25 November 1867. Then the Duke departed Melbourne on Saturday 4 January 1868 for Hobart.
On Thursday, 2 January 1868 the Argus reported the following on page four:
The address to His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh. signed by the old colonists of Victoria. In this city six pages and a half of parchment, to be attached to the address, have already been filled with signatures, while in Geelong, Ballarat, Bendigo, and elsewhere in the interior, similar progress is being made. We understand that the address will be presented on Friday. Application has been made by some of our enterprising photographers for permission to make copies of this highly interesting document, containing as it will the autographs of most of the founders of the colony, and opportunity will be afforded them to do so on Friday morning, on application at the Mechanics’ Institute. Old colonists wishing to attach their names, and who have not already done so, can sign in the course of to-day, at the Mechanics’ Institute, in Collins-street.
On Friday 3 January 1868 the Argus reported This is the last day but one of the Prince’s stay in Victoria, and he will have a busy time of it. His first engagement is to receive the address of the old colonists, which will take place at noon at the Public Library.
On Saturday, 4 January 1868 the Argus published on pages 5 and 6 a list of people, who had signed to date and reported that Mr. E. HENTY briefly stated that, as the oldest Victorian colonist, he had been deputed to present the address, the acceptance of which would give the greatest satisfaction to the early settlers, whose names were appended, and mentioned that 600 signatures had already been attached, a number which would probably be increased by 150 if His Royal Highness would permit a few hours to elapse before the list was finally closed.
The following points are some general observations of the copy of the thirty five page manuscript held by the Kilmore Historical Society. The State Library of Victoria holds a facsimlie (923.142 AL 29 F, and its pages are in a different sequence to the Kilmore Historical Society copy.
The overall total is 973 entries.
The Argus list totals 586 entries.

General Comments
It is important to appreciate that people travelling to Victoria during the period 1834 to 1843 may have travelled overland, from other colonies by ship, and from overseas by ship. The arrival details may be the only record of arrival in Victoria. For example, John Murchison, arrived overland in Melbourne in 1838 and later lived in Kilmore and Kew.
Many names were checked using several sources, mainly old Victorian newspapers over the years 1860 to 1875 on Trove, the Public Record Office of Victoria website for passengers arriving as assisted passengers 1839-1871, other shipping records online, and general searches online.
The list below is in alphabetical order so that readers can more easily check for a surname. There is a reference at the end of each entry so that, if needed, a researcher can check the original entry. The reference shows the line number and the page number. THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH IN VICTORIA.
PRESENTATION OF THE ADDRESS OF THE OLD VICTORIAN COLONISTS.
The address from the “old colonists” of Victoria, which has been in course of signature for the last few days in Melbourne, Geelong, Ballarat, and Sandhurst, was presented to the Duke of Edinburgh at noon yesterday, in the Public Library. The signatures of over 600 gentlemen, whose colonial residence dates back, in accordance with the limit prescribed, not less than twenty-five years, have been attached to the address, and the document is the most interesting of the kind that the Duke has yet received.
The names are all written on sheets of parchment, which form the leaves of a handsomely-bound book, prefaced by the address, which is brilliantly illuminated. His Royal Highness, who was accompanied by His Excellency the Governor, Lord Newry, Mr. Brierly, Lieutenant Haig, Mr. Manners Sutton, and Lieutenant Rothwell, A.D.C., arrived at the PublicLibrary shortly after twelve o’clock, and was received on the stone terrace of the building by Sir Redmond Barry, Sir James Palmer, Sir Francis Murphy, and Mr. D. C. Macarthur.
The Royal party at once proceeded to the north end of the Library, where a few of the early settlers—conspicuous among whom were Mr. E. Henty, the Hon. J. P. Fawkner, and the Hon. J. O’Shanassy—with a small company of ladies, had assembled.
Mr. The address was then read by Mr. Henty, as follows :—
“To His Royal Highness Prince Alfred Ernest Albert, Duke of
Edinburgh, K.G., &c.
“May it please your Royal Highness,— “We, the undersigned, being colonists of Victoria for a period of a quarter of a century and upwards, venture to approach your Royal Highness with expressions of unaltered loyalty to Her Majesty’s throne and person, and our very sincere and hearty congratulations to your Royal Highness on your auspicious visit to this distant dependency of the British empire.
“We can confidently assure your Royal Highness that, however attractive republican institutions may be to young communities generally, Victoria is in the main free from the taint of any such predilection. The loyalty and attachment to monarchical government of those numbered amongst her older colonists have been strengthened by their enlarged experience, and by the deep conviction, ever increasing with their ripening years, that their material interests will be best protected by the perpetuation of an intimate connexion with the great empire over which Her Majesty rules — an empire the language, laws, customs, and institutions of which it is their privilege to inherit.
“We may be allowed to esteem the visit of your Royal Highness to these shores as of the utmost importance, regarded from an Imperial as well as from a colonial point of view. Your Royal Highness has now had an opportunity of satisfying yourself, and may bear testimony on your return to Europe, that the colonists of Victoria, although they have left their mother country, have not lost the spirit of enterprise, the energy, the self-reliance, the love of law and order, which distinguish the British race; and that, in common with their fellow-countrymen at home, they have qualities the possession of which by her people has made England great and glorious amongst the nations; while your presence here proves to the colony at large, but especially to our colonial-born youth, that Her Majesty’s solicitude for our welfare is unabated.
“With a sincere hope that the visit of your Royal Highness to the other colonies of the Australian group may be gratifying to you, and your ultimate return to the Royal circle safe and attended with every happiness, we beg leave to remain, with the greatest respect, your Royal Highness’s most humble and most obedient servants.”
His ROYAL HIGHNESS replied :-
“Gentlemen,—Though one of the last of the many addresses which I have received since my arrival in Victoria, yours is, I assure you, very far from being the least interesting to me; and I thank yousincerely, in the name of the Queen, for the expressions of loyalty to Her Majesty’s throne and person contained in it.
“I can well understand that you, who have watched the wonderfully rapid rise and progress of this colony from its infancy to the present day, must often have felt anxious lest the natural feeling of pride in the great success and prosperity to which Victoria has attained should weaken the loyalty of its people, and cause them to underrate the advantages of being so closely connected with the mother-country; but now, when you have witnessed the unbounded enthusiasm with which your fellow-colonists have received me, the son of their Queen—when you have observed that their chief aim has been to impress upon me that their loyalty and devotion to Her Majesty are unaltered, and that they cling with affection to England and English institutions—you may well rest assured, as I confidently do, that this colony is second to none in loyalty and attachment to its sovereign.
“The present prosperity and wealth of this colony, of which I have had the privilege and pleasure of judging for myself, could, indeed, never have been attained without those great characteristics of the British race to which you allude ; and while I feel convinced that the youth of the colony inherit these virtues, I also hope that my stay among you may help to convince them, born so many thousand miles from England, of the love and solicitude which Her Majesty feels for all her subjects.
“In thanking you for your kind wishes for my welfare and happiness, I cannot conclude without assuring you that I shall leave your hospitable shores with deep regret, and that I shall always regard with the sincerest attachment and interest the colonists, old and young, of Victoria.”
The Hon. J. P. FAWKNER addressed a few remarks to the Prince, reminding His Royal Highness that he was in Port Phillip in the year 1803; that he was the oldest inhabitant of Melbourne, where he settled in 1835—one year after Mr. Henty settled at Portland; and that he had seen the city spring from a wilderness, and grow day by day until it reached its present dimensions, boasting buildings of architectural beauty, such as that in which they were
assembled.
Mr. HENTY having thanked His Royal Highness for graciously
receiving the address, the Prince and his suite withdrew.
Subjoined, are the names of the gentlemen who signed the
address, with the dates of their arrival in the colony. The signatures are given, as nearly as possible in the order in which they reached us (now in alphabetical oder) :—
