Sad News

Kilmore Historical society has been informed by Mitchell shire Council that an order has been issued as of 27 January 2022 to remove the upper storey of the All Nations Hotel at 38 Sydney Street. This order was made on the grounds of public safety as the building was deemed to be structurally unsound.

The All Nations Hotel was built in two sections between 1865 and 1880, which is why the two halves are famously out of alignment, as can be seen clearly at street level. It functioned as a hotel under various licensees until 1915. Later uses included a Coffee Palace, a fruit store, and a pizza and take away food outlet.

It is sad that such a significant contributor to the historical streetscape is to be lost.

KHS has no power to intervene now that the order has been issues and we can only encourage the owners to other historical premises to maintain their buildings to the point where demolition is not seen as a necessity. We have already lost far too much of our built heritage due to creeping deterioration. It is not long since the building opposite, the old Pie Shop, was also demolished on the grounds of structural deterioration.

  1. It is in a HO90 and must go through the planning system for any demolition bid- it was built in two stages so makes sense that one level differs in alignment from the other? Ensure an independent engineering report is sought from experienced heritage engineers.
In a more valuable location it could justified to pin it back to and support it internally with a steel frame?

    1. That would certainly be the case if the owner had made an application to demolish it. However in this case the Council has already made the partial demolition order on the grounds of public safety, so the planning system does not really apply. It’s sad to see such a historic building removed, but it’s not something we can do anything about at this point.
